Pregnancy & Postnatal Physiotherapy

Supporting Your Body During Pregnancy and After Birth

Pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood place considerable demands on the body. Changes to the pelvic floor, abdominal wall, breathing, posture, strength and movement can occur throughout pregnancy and continue during the postnatal period.

Some women experience symptoms during pregnancy, while others notice changes after birth or when returning to exercise months or years later.

At Well Woman Physio, we provide evidence-based assessment and rehabilitation to support women during pregnancy, following vaginal or Caesarean birth, and throughout the postnatal years.

Our approach recognises that recovery is not simply about pelvic floor exercises. It involves understanding your symptoms, restoring confidence, rebuilding strength and helping you return to the activities that matter to you.

Returning to Exercise After Birth

Many women are eager to return to exercise but feel uncertain about where to start.

We can help you:

  • Return to walking
  • Return to the gym
  • Return to running
  • Return to strength training
  • Return to sport

Our approach is based upon current evidence and individual assessment rather than arbitrary timelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a pelvic health physiotherapist after birth?

Many women benefit from assessment between 6–12 weeks after delivery, although assessment can be helpful at any stage, even years later.

Is it normal to leak after having a baby?

Bladder leakage is common but not considered normal or inevitable part of motherhood, and many women improve with appropriate treatment.

Do I need an internal examination?

No. Internal assessment is always optional and only performed with your consent.

Can I return to running after a C-section?

Yes. Return to running is possible after both vaginal and Caesarean births, but an individual assessment can help guide safe progression.

Can physiotherapy help abdominal separation?

Exercise-based rehabilitation may help improve function, strength and confidence following diastasis recti.

This comprehensive pelvic health appointment is designed for women experiencing a range of concerns, including pelvic floor weakness, diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation often occurring after pregnancy), back pain, and hip pain.  We’ll assess your posture, breathing patterns, core strength, and movement mechanics, often using external techniques.  Depending on your specific needs and symptoms, an internal examination may be beneficial for a more thorough evaluation.  We’ll discuss this possibility with you, ensuring you feel comfortable and informed every step of the way.  Together, we’ll create a personalised plan involving exercises, manual therapy, and lifestyle advice to improve your function, reduce pain, and enhance your overall well-being.

Complex Initial Consultation

We understand that some pain conditions are complex and require a more in-depth approach. To ensure we can thoroughly assess your needs and provide the best possible care, we recommend booking a complex initial consultation if you have multiple areas of pain, or if your pain has been longstanding or has a complex history. This will allow us to listen carefully and understand your unique situation.  While a standard initial consultation may be sufficient for some, a complex consultation helps us avoid needing a second appointment and ensures we can address all your concerns from the start.
